Snow White’s path is an archetypal journey of individuation, where the ego must die and the true self must awaken.

Descent into Darkness: The Dissolution of the Ego
The story begins with betrayal — the Queen, her stepmother, seeks her death. This initiates Snow White’s exile into the forest, which is not merely physical but psychic. She enters a symbolic Nigredo: the dark night of the soul, the stage where the ego begins to disintegrate.
Winter is the season of death, stillness, and frozen ground. Earth becomes the element of burial, symbolizing a return to the raw material of being.
The forest is the labyrinth of the unconscious, where familiar structures collapse and the initiate must confront fear, solitude, and the loss of identity.
This phase is necessary: the ego must be broken down so that the true Self can begin to emerge.

Spring brings the return of light and the element of water, heralding the Albedo phase, or whitening. Here, the soul is cleansed. The mundane acts of cleaning, cooking, and keeping order are metaphors for the discipline of purification — the integration of inner fragments and the rediscovery of sacred simplicity.
Snow White begins to wash away the illusions of her past, letting go of royal vanities. She becomes inwardly still, emotionally receptive, spiritually fertile.

- The corset – tightens until Snow White collapses. Symbol of external control, self-imposed limitation, and bodily repression.
- The poisoned comb – penetrates the scalp. Symbol of mental manipulation, intrusive thoughts, and vanity.
- The poisoned apple – eaten voluntarily. Symbol of knowledge, duality, and the final seduction of egoic desire.
This is the Citrinitas phase, or yellowing, the moment when the initiate becomes aware of the split between appearances and essence.
Air is the element of thought, intellect, and deception. It is through the apple that Snow White “dies” — yet this is no ordinary death. It is a ritual death, the final step before transformation.

Autumn brings decay and harvest, and fire becomes the catalyst of sacred transformation. It is then that the Princearrives — not a mere romantic savior, but the Solar Spirit, the divine masculine principle which kisses the sleeping soul and rekindles her essence.
This moment is the Rubedo, the final phase: reddening, illumination, the coniunctio oppositorum — the union of opposites. Snow White rises, not as a child, but as a sovereign being. Her soul has traversed the underworld and returned whole.
